Blitz the Night

Okay so I have some serious catching up to do on the ole post front. Sitting in wait in the still working (touch wood) external hardrive is a growing collection of style, vintage and all round fashion full snaps from the past couple of months. My laptop has just returned from being repaired FOR THE FOURTH TIME THIS YEAR, so I will be doing my darndest to get all these old pictures up for you to have a squiz. Sure they are a little dated now in this fast paced Perth world but I owe it to the darling people that went to the trouble of posing for me to actually post their pic for the world to see.

First up, photos from Blitz the Night - August 21, 2010 @ Chris Huzzard studios, 104B Murray Street, Perth City.

A great night showcasing Perth designers and even yours truly, little ole vintage peddler - The Ginger Fox. It was so exciting to see some of my prized threads coming down the catwalk and luckily enough I had talented photographer Clint Conner along with me to capture the moment.

All up there was 16 entrants signed up for the Blitz the Night competition ; 7 Sins Swimwear, Natasha Mapleson, Alana & Co, Eco Peko, Fallen Feathers, Red Dusk Jewellery, Pardon my French, Silicone Saturdays, Jo Denham Designer Jeans, Rock a Frock, Elie Marie, Cassie Lee, Samantha/Ninety Seven Clothing, Madalyn Da Luz/Savannah Clothing, and Rommi Higgins/Scarlett Fashion.

Taking out the prizes for the night was designer Terryn Lee Hall from 7 Sins Swimwear and the Flemming Sisters from E-Boutique NinetySeven Clothing

This particular cause holds a special place in Toby's heart with her beloved sister Pippa Beard suffering from the debilitating disease. Mitochondrial disease is a potentially fatal genetic disorder that robs the body of energy. Read her story here.

Last Thursday was rather a fun day for me as I got to test my styling chops at the promo shoot for the Neo-Masquerade Ball. Cinching gorgeous gals into corsets and sneaking peaks at the bare chested lads, pretty fun indeed I would say.

The gold dress front and centre is from my personal collection. Its an awesome 80's strapless with a divine asymmetrical hemline in a giant tulle and fabric bustle. My favourite.

Laith McGregor: taking doodles to a whole new level.

My new favourite show is Art Nation on the ABC! Each week they showcase amazing Aussie artists who are producing absolutely incredible and inspirational works. I keep stumbling across it during my quite Sunday afternoons, but I think I will have to lock it in from now on for fear I'll miss out on my addictive art fix. One of the artist on show this week really blew me away. Melbournite, Laith McGregor invests countless hours to create intricate and strangely sublime images of bearded men. What is truly incredible is his medium of choice is Biros; Bic biros to be exact. The textures, detail and shading are phenomenal and the blue of the pen gives the hairy men a deep glow.

Just as a matter of interest, given the mass popularity of beards and moustaches; just when did facial hair become so cool?

Ginger's style guide: Winter

Hey girls, have a seat.

We need to have a chat because I'm worried about you. Ok we don't live in the UK and it doesn't snow, but ladies its chilly! Your going to catch your death running from pub to club in your saucy mini dress and heels. Sure we all get nice and warm rocking out on the dance floor, but what happens when its time to leave and the taxi's are few and far between.

So here is my public service announcement - rug up sweeties. Here are some tips on how to stay stylish and sexy while keeping the chills at bay.

Take a cardigan, wear a blazer or just throw on an over sized sweater. Better yet wear a gorgeous coat and just leave it in the coat check.

Stockings! There is no need to freeze just to show off your stems. Your look may even look that little more polished with a set of chic black stockings. Here is the important part, look out for the denier (that's the thickness) If you want a really warm set of stockings then a higher denier is better. I wear at least 70 but I have seen them go up to 200 denier.

Boots! Oh so in right now AND you can sneak a pair of socks under them to keep your tootsies real cosy like.

Lastly, for that extra little bit of warmth you cant go past a street cuddle with the boy you took out (or just found ;)

Hey kids, how have you been? I've missed you.

As you may have noticed I have been very absent on here of late, and my reason...LIFE! Its sure does get pretty complex at times doesn't it; yup its a tricky tricky business this whole game. Fear not though dear reader, we are not heading into D&M territory here. No, instead I thought what better way to get stuck back into my bloggy blog than by answering a few questions that the lovely people from Storm Watches and 2threads sent to me.

In support of their gorgeous timepiece collection, the questions are all time related. Now I found this to be really quite fitting seeing as the thing I need most desperately right now is time... and a tumble dryer!

1. The time you felt most inspired by fashion – your most inspiring fashion moment

Stumbling across this magnificent shot of Elle 'The Body' Macpherson in an old Australian Vogue circa 1989.  Never before had I seen fashion so closely resemble art. Her form and pose are so absolutely perfect in the silk dress that she looks like an incredible sculpture painstakingly carved from the rocky surrounds.

2. The time you were proudest of your outfit or style

One outfit stands proudest above all the rest, though it failed miserably in the style stakes. 2001 year 12 High School Ball dress! Hailing from a small country town I had precious few options on offer. Rather than wear a hideous black halter neck dress I decided to put my very limited sewing experience to use.

With only a picture torn from a Cosmopolitan magazine as reference, I designed my first outfit. The skirt was full length and voluminous made from blood red satin with a black chiffon layer over the top to make it a shimmering maroon. The bodice was made from a gold top I bought from Myers that I then flipped upside down, cut up a bit and then sewed all back together in some way that made sense to me at the time. Overall, not the most inspired of designs however I am still proud that I managed to make something wearable and in such rich and opulent colours too.

Too bad it didn't survive the night; the year 12 boys decimated the back hem while moshing ferociously to Limp Biskit 'Rollin'. What a way to go!

3. The Time in Fashion you would most like to return to – e.g 60’s style, 70’s style...

It was a tough choice, I almost went with the elegance, glamour and femininity of the 30's. However, if I was to go time traveling I just couldn't miss the all round style of the 70's! They had it all; sparkling sexpot disco dancers, bronzed hostesses in maxi dresses besides azure pools, wild and free boho babes, rocking concert tees, high waisted jeans and they even had geek chic before there even existed geek chic (though in slightly thicker and itchier stockings).

You only have to look at Boogie Nights for proof - Life was wild, stylish and fantastic for Dirk Diggler and Roller Girl in the sun drenched 70's.

Stylist Love: Edward K Gibbon of Skins

With the next SATC epic looming (oh its just not going to be that great but you have to watch it don't you? such a pickle) I gots to thinking about stylists. Now along with the rest of the world I adore the kooky Patricia Fields and her fearless styling, but who else can I rely on for my television fashion fix - Edward K Gibbon that's who!

Cassie: without a doubt my favourite Skins styler.

Stylist extraordinaire for the UK drama series Skins, Mr Gibbons consistently comes through with the style goods. The show may be on the way out with its increasingly far fetched and overly melodramatic plots, yet I will continue to watch for the clothing alone. He carefully considers each characters background and personality and presents a fabulously skewed yet finely tuned version of typical UK style. Mish-mashed prints and fabrics, bold colours and no fear of experimentation.

Now for an added bonus; in the process of researching this post I uncovered a fantastic little find on the Skins website. Gibbons has an entire section devoted to Skins style where he explains the thought process that went into the season 4 cast costumes. Fantastic stylist insight! Get it here :)

From time to time I indulge in a bit of self-googling to see where The Ginger Fox has travelled in the www. Unfortunately this time I was just a little bit mortified to find my logo used as the image for a terrible pop song. Thank god the song belongs to a fictional pop star who appeared on iCarly (a nickelodeon show I have never heard of) and who is essentially a parody of Britney Spears. However it is safe to say I am not at all happy with youtube user 'talkinThatBlah'
My poor poor cross stitch lady, she has served me well and does not deserve to listen to this song over an over again (oh dear 8,928 times so far), though clearly I'm not helping her by posting the video haha.

My tip for trying the turban: keep it casual and fun. Wear it like a beanie on the back of your head with hair falling free. Fringes and bangs help a great deal to integrate and soften the look.

I am not a fan of a turan wrapped tightly round the head with your hair tucked under. It's so harsh, all emphasis is on the face which needs to be flawless. Even Jessica Stam looks strange in this get-up, and if something can make that girl look less than perfect then thats something Im going to stay waaaay away from.

Phew have I busy folks! There are some very exciting developments occurring with The Ginger Fox that I will let you in on soon. For the meantime I have some catching up to do in terms of Perth style.

I have been hitting the various university markets of late, scanning for dolled up dans and dames. Unfortunately I haven't had much luck this week. I put this down to the temperature plummeting sending everyone scrambling for any available article of clothing to keep them warm, style be damned. It is also, quite largely I would say, due to my reluctance to emerge from beneath my pastel plaid nanna blanket to go in search of the fashion forward folk. Lastly, it is because the fashion trend at UWA now seems to be roughly strewn together newspaper garments that leave little to the imagination. Not the most inspired trend, but I will feature it non the less. haha

Adrehel did not fall victim to the paper fad and seems to have her winter wardrobe pretty worked out.

Now, I realise this was not the most style packed post however, fear not! I hit the streets today and snapped a few more gorgeous outfits and will post the pics tomorrow so stay tuned. P.s if anyone can tell me what the paper people were doing I would love to hear from you. I hope the bow tie guy won :)

Ginger's Style Icons: Bettie Page

Bettie Page - vivacious vixen and perhaps the most iconic pin-up of all time. In the 50's, Page's red lips, raven hair and divine curves graced the pages of just about every American men's magazine there was to be found. Her shots are a wicked combination of sex and smiles.

"I've never seen the impish glee in Bettie's eyes in any other model," Elizabeth Snead, fashion editor USA Today.

Page's style and trademark bangs have had tremendous influence on fashion and pop-culture. You only have to look at the rockabilly indie girls of today to see the original pin-up girl's spirit shine through. A stroll through Wheels & Dollbaby must be somewhat akin to what it'd be like to peruse Bettie's wardrobe. She has even reached the runways of Milan; inspiring the likes of Dolce & Gabbana in collections laced with corsets, fishnet stockings and lingerie.

In her handmade bikinis (yes she made them herself), leopard print and leather, she laid the foundation for the cult and fetish scenes we see today; from burlesque to bondage.

Chills and style thrills at UWA

You can't always have a giant SLR camera handy now can you? Well lucky I have my new iPhone and twitter app. Yep I am now ultra-super-massively connected it boggles the mind. My phone is now the portal to everyone I have ever met, the master of my events, the answer to all questions and grand keeper of my secrets. In such a short period of time I have become entirely dependant on this little device. Now given my history with anything electrical, me thinks this will not end well... But hey, live in the now I say, and boy is it fun to tweet Perth style.

It was a wonderfully warm, sun drenched day today and people really seemed to be enjoying laying about on the grass and relaxing in a manner that only students can. To bad the sun didn't reach me at my stall; instead I had deep shade, concrete and an icy wind wiping through the UWA corridors. I spent the day either scrambling for vintage jumpers to use as blankets or choreographing my own version of Zumba fitness (mine has jumping jacks ehh ehh). Curse you glorious, carefree children of the sun, curse you.

The obsession with florals contiunues

A massive, gigantic,pretty much dominating trend in my wardrobe is florals; I simply cant get enough of the pretty little things. My favourite designs are striking and feature large blossoms in contrasting shades on dark backgrounds. Like a moth to a flame, I cannot help but gravitate to them. I will blindly trample any who stand between me and a deliciously dark floral number, the mere sight of which transforms me instantly into a fashion zombie, mindlessly driven by an overwhelming need - floowwwwwers...floowwwwwwwers.
