A long New Year walk.

This New Years eve was perhaps the strangest of my life. It began when I accepted an invitation to what I thought was a small gathering of friends, and friend of friends, at a country house in Balingup. It turned out to be a sizable party with costumes, music, champagne, glow in the dark Frisbee, tents, food, dancing, singing, open hearts and fine new friends. I did however spend the first early hours of 2012 horribly lost in the bush with a man named Apples.

It was a beautiful night, cool but not cold, with welcome moments of fine drizzle. At various times in the night I wandered off alone to sit and enjoy the stars and nature. It's been awhile since I've been out in the country and I was thoroughly enjoying my little wilderness appreciation party time-outs. So when the party decided to go on a bush walk up the neighboring hill I was more than keen. Group cohesion of a gathering that large, not to mention extremely intoxicated, is quite possibly impossible. We party goers managed to make it half way up the hill, an impressive fete of organisation and yelling, though now this had planted a seed. My new goal of the evening was to reach the top of the hill. Taking the group with me was clearly a no go, they were very content in their current position and I was certain there would be no further ascent that night. Then Apples appeared out of the dark.

Apples had been absent most of the night trekking through the bush, climbing trees and communicating with the nocturnal animalia . At around 1 or 2 am he had found his way back to the party and stopped in at our hillside location, welcomed with a chorus of 'Hi Apples'. Satisfied with the state of thing he about turned and set off once more; 'Bye Apples'. This was just the go-getter I needed and so I sprang up and took off after him into the bush.

We climbed in the dark, me with my hands stretched out for obstacle alert, Apples strangely confident with hands in pocket. I was wearing a pink glowing bracelet (of course) but I soon abandoned it, leaving it like a beacon on slender branch jutting out from a tree stump. Onward and upward we trekked, tripping, stumbling and charging face first into bush and branch; this we found it very amusing. I couldn't say if we ever did reach the top, I certainly hope so.

At 'the top' we rested. Looking up at the black silhouette of the tree tops against the luminous cloudy night, we chatted about life. Before long it was time to head on home, and so we began the descent down the hill and it was at this time that our combined incompetence came into play. Neither of us we discovered, have even the snippet of a sense of direction nor any conceivable navigational skills to speak of, and yet we both hiked on confidently in the belief that the other was an authority.

It didn't take long for us to realise we were lost. It is hilarious now to look back and see how each orienteering choice made, logically or instinctively decided upon, only lead us further and further away from home. Always optimistic, Apples had a plan. He could produce a surprisingly loud and clear bushman call; COOOEEE. The call, which I requested he make every half an hour or so, was never answered. It echoed across the landscape and was acknowledged only by my standard response of; "that really bums me out".

So it was that I spent the remainder of the night and the beginning of the new year climbing over logs, falling down holes, scaling fences, encountering brambles and trudging through mud, all in a full length white gown. It sounds like a sorry affair, but I have to say I enjoyed myself the entire time. There was moments of niggling worry but there was just no point in dwelling on it. The country side was far too beautiful and we often took time to sit in the dark and listen to the Banjo frogs in the dams and to the Kangeroo who seemed to be always around but never seen.

By the time the sun came up we had found a road. Not our road, nor one we even knew. We walked up and down a long stretch of this road but would lose confidence in our chosen direction and so turn around and go the other way. Eventually we swallowed our pride and concluded that we needed external help. On one property it appeared they must have had a New Years gathering much like ours. There were tents and caravans dotted across a paddock. We approached a small blue tent and Apples called through the fabric;

"I'm terribly sorry to bother you but we're very lost."

And so we were rescued. James, a middle aged sweet heart on a New Years (romantic from what I could see) trip down south with his wife, put some clothes on and drove us back to the party. Our friends, filthy and still festive surmised our adventure instantly with a definitive; "You retards!"

I've been on quite the hiatus from my blog and online store. Dust has been gathering in the toolbar and the shopping cart is rusty. But I'm back and returning with me are a stack of new vintage pieces in a crisp new online look.

Hope you enjoy what's in store and please keep an eye out for the heaps more to come in the next couple of weeks. I'll be working overtime to get as much up as I can; make up for those quite months.

What have I been doing though? I'll be able to share my exciting project with you very soon. It's not at all vintage related and it's been my most worthwhile creative endeavor to date.
Hopefully there are still some folks out the reading (if so do please leave a comment) and if not I look forward to capturing your attention again.

Local lad Lloyd Hughes, is currently raising money (via crowd funding site Pozible) to host an exhibition of his epic photography project, Penelope and Odysseus, a visual interpretation of Homer's 'The Odyssey'.

The project was 4 years in the making and shot entirely on film. Our help will see these 24 images realised on 1.5 x 1.5m framed prints and exhibited in late February.

You can offer as little as $1 and as much as the purse strings allow. Every little bit matters and is monumentally appreciated.

WIN - Rachel & Henry Climb a Hill debut album

Last Saturday I attended the launch of Rachel & Henry Climb a Hill debut album. The Fremantle arts centre never looked better with balloons, party lights, colourful bunting, kites, flowers, popcorn and fairy floss. Entertaining the sell out crowd were Simone & Girlfunkle, Polly Medlen & DJ Troy Division. Rachel and Henry ended the night, taking to the stage and performing songs from the album 'The Little Things'. A particular highlight coming in the encore as the band performed acapella supported by enthusiastic hand clapping from the audience.

Water for Elephants: Costume design by Jacqueline West

I can't say I am too huge a fan of the film Water for Elephants. Not sure if I will ever truly embrace a flick with Mr 'Twilight' Pattinson in it. That being said, I will recommend it for viewing for the costumes alone. A divine feast for the eyes, the 1930's inspired satin's and sequins glow in the richly saturated cinematography. Costume designer, Jacqueline West is no stranger to period pieces and has been responsible for (among others) the Victorian garbs of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, the Georgian wardrobe of Quills and the evolving fashion of the last century in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, for which she was nominated for an oscar.

What really stood out to me was Reese Witherspoon's character, Marlena, and her beyond fabulous circus costumes. They had an edge to them; incorporating cut-out designs, high buckled shoes and boots (a nod to today's fashion) and a mixture of delicate pale colours or cool, deep greys. Have to say, after watching this flick, I am itching to throw a little 30's circus chic into my wardrobe, that's for sure.

Just found a lovely little blog post by fellow Perth blogger Jessica Mcleod - Made By Bees. I was tickled pink to see this particular street style post: the dress is a Ginger Fox vintage number, and, as a bonus, it's on a lovely friend of mine, Perrie Taylor. I adore stand-out vintage designs like this spunky red number. It's a fantastic example of 80's American vintage - bold and wonderfully crafted (sturdy, vibrant cotton). Vintage items like this are a challenge to wear sometimes, it takes a little extra thought towards how to style it and more importantly, a healthy dash of confidence. Well worth it when you end up in a head turning combo like our Miss Taylor's.

William Street was a buzz with fine folks and dazzling art this weekend just gone. If you didn't make it along to Outskirts, you surely missed out. There was such a fantastic bustle of people in Northbridge, and you couldn't swing a glow mesh bag without hitting some fabulous young designer, artist or vintage enthusiast proudly displaying their amazing work. Hip Hip Horray I say! Yay for Perth talent and thanks a plenty to the marvelous minds at OnWilliam for bringing them all together.

No looking at fabrics with colours and textures that aren't flattering to your complexion or body type. Forget how pretty the dress is and move on to something that will bring out your glow.

Do be stingy!

Set yourself a budget when heading out. Stick to it, there is no need to make desperate “there was nothing else” purchases. Times will come up where you simply cannot resist the 3-7 extra items that will break your budget. These are the phenomenally perfect dresses for you, a winning moment. A bi-winning moment in fact, as you saved all the money sticking to budget.

Do-Not buy an ill fitting out-fit!

If the dress doesn't sit perfectly on you but you know it will look amazing on another girl. These beauties should fit like a glove and if you believe in positive shopping karma, then we will all receive our “it was meant to be” dress sooner than later.

Do wear your new gem ASAP!

Give it a whirl and see how it feels. Warning; Confidence levels go up when wearing one off piece that only you can pull off *wink*.

Do-Not over do it!

Yes it is ever so 60’s and you are channeling Edie Sedgwick, just tone it down unless you are going to a dress up party! Show your individuality through accessories, make-up and hair to inject a fresh and modern twist.

Do hold your chin up!

The perfect fit has all the elements to make you “POP!” Embrace your body and wear it with confidence, it’s the difference between popping and sticking out like a sore thumb. Be mindful of how content and pretty it makes you feel and it will make you own the garment rather than it owning you.

Do-Not clone!

If you or your friends have a similar vintage outfit its an automatic no. A unique piece is an expression of your taste, so don’t start to look bland.

Do Rotate!

Don’t keep doing the same spin of an old record. I’m talking time record. Go back to the future with contemporary options and toned down classical pieces. You are not the poster girl for an era, show what makes you timeless.

Do-Not get ratty!

Moth eaten, ripping at the seams, missing too many buttons and fading are inevitable after decades. Those vintage dresses are not worth their dollars if they cheapen your look. Quality vintage sellers do exist and are worth those extra dollars.

Do love it!

Put on the right shoes for it, spray your fave perfume, and a must do is contrasting lipstick so one cannot look away from your lips! Be bold with accessories, try on a hat or headband, gloves, or stockings and see what works. Dress up time is time well spent in attention to detail.

Last Friday, plagued by misfortune and short of time, we four persevered. A road trip to Pinjara for the latest Ginger Fox photo shoot turned out to be a test of our optimism and problem solving skills. I had to leave my car at a service station half way down, hopelessly broken down. After much tinkering and scratching of heads we eventually recruit the photographer, the incredibly talented Tessa Kit Zawadzki, to come collect us. We get to the location and chew into a couple more precious hours with hair, makeup and clothing selection. Finally we step outside, dressed to the nines, fluffed and rouged, and the heavens pour down on our heads. None the less, it was a wonderful day, with the best of ladies and, against the odds, the shots turned out better than I could have hoped.

My inaugural tattoo, happily etched into my flesh by the talented Miles of WA INK, Fremantle. The product of 6 years of musing and designing; I went through 6 different designs and 5 body placements before deciding on this particular tattoo. Thankfully it turned out great and I couldn't be happier with it.

I took the dive into ink land a couple of weeks ago, and this day I have dubbed 'The Day of Pain'. In a mighty feat of planning I went from a morning dentist appointment (2 needles and a numb face) straight to the tattoo parlour for a second dose of stabby pain. Worth it? Hell yeah!

My latest market outfit. Always a difficult decision to make in the mornings as I find the balance between style, functionality and whatever hasn't been banished to the laundry pile.

Notoriously forgetful and, for the better part of most days, lost in the clouds, I am simply awful at following up on things. At the start of each year I hit the shops full of optimism, and buy myself the perfect diary. This year it was an A5, 3 ring binder in a green, grey and black print. I even bought multi coloured paper for each binder section; calender, notes & critical information, creative notes etc. For that glorious afternoon, after departing Officeworks, I felt on top, organised, adult! Do I use my diary now? Do I even know where my diary is? I think you can guess the answer to those questions. 

I received the Kreativ Blogger Award from Bunny Hop, an amazing Perth blogger, a few weeks ago. A wonderful start to the day, I must say, to find that little nugget of praise for something that you spend countless hours on. However, me being me, I completely forgot to pay it forward. I shall amend that here and now, forthwith!

SEVEN THINGS ABOUT ME YOU MAY FIND INTERESTING

I have always loved dance. Not being a very vocal child, i don't think I expressed this to my parents very well and as such they enrolled me in Karate classes. I hated Karate! When getting dropped off at my second lesson, I locked myself in the car and refused to get out unless they change my after school activity. I was then enrolled in modelling classes. hmmm still not dance though, just glorified walking.
I like the way my hands smell after cutting onions.
My right foot is the bigger foot.
A woman once ran up to me and my dad and, after confirming we were actually father and daughter, exclaimed; "I didn't think is was possible for a daughter to be taller than her father!"
I will watch the same movie up to 4 times in one day.
My cars to date have been called - Barney Krunk, Perry & Uter.
My parents did finally allow me to join a dance class when I was younger. I learned how to clog.

South East Asian - Suburban Master Chef

I have some very clever pals indeed. Several of my foodie friends are members of a monthly Master Chef challenge night. A theme is decided and each would-be chef is assigned a course; entree, main, desert. The mighty setting for the latest culinary battle; exotic tastes of South East Asia.

I don't think I will be able to adequately express just how stuffed I was after this amazing feast. Now please excuse me as I have forgotten the names of the dishes, but I will try and make something up for you;

ENTREE

Chicken, coconut, chili and ginger soup.
Chicken Sung Choi Bao with purple & black sticky rice

MAIN

Banana prawns, tom yum risotto cake,
Scallops garnished with pink grapefruit, kaffir lime leaf, and roasted garlic slice,

DESERT

Creamy rice pudding with roasted coconut.

Unfortunately we forgot to take photos of all the dishes but you get the idea; the kids can cook! My pick for the night - The light and zingy coconut, chicken, ginger soup.

You may remember I ran a competition last month to win a vintage voucher for my online store. An easily forgettable side of the competition was the Mystery Prize which I can now reveal... because I finally drew it tonight! It's just a little sketch for the winner EMMA HACKETT who, as it turns out, has a delightful blog herself; Scrapbook de la Emma. The sketch also features Claire of Stolen from Grandma and Sophie of Owl vs Dove, who kindly helped me spread the word about my competition.

Now here's a little story to cap off tonight's post. I was thoroughly enjoying my drive home from Fremantle tonight with good tunes on the radio and a box of perfectly salted chippies on the passenger seat (the best passenger!). I was especially happy when Cosmo Jarvis's song 'Gay Pirates' came on the radio. Ok ok the title does suggest a rather awful and offensive song would follow, and yet, it is possibly the most perfect and honest title for what is certainly a product of extensive thought and talent. I am mad for pirate ditties; The Decemberists 'The Mariner's Revenge Song' is an all time favourite.

I cant say how happy I was to hear a pirate melody that carries such weight in its lyrics. It is the story of a love between two men at sea and the torment they endure from their fellow shipmates. It is uplifting melody while being remarkably moving, commenting on the prejudice and intolerance that gay couples still encounter. It's just such a well written and lovable song, people will be dancing to this tune without even realising it's meaning. Its a modern day 'Afternoon Delight', if a little more significant.

The moral of the story; I was singing Gay Pirates at the top of my lungs as I pulled up to turn right onto Bruce Street in Nedlands. My thoughts were deeply entrenched in the song and maintaining my notes at the maximum volume possible that I didn't realise I was opposite Pata Negra tapas restaurant, and my window was wound down. I like to think that I treated the diners to an amazing vocal delicacy, but it is more likely they would have believed me to be bellowing madly at the dashboard. Perhaps a little more embarrassing than when I am (regularly) caught singing enthusiastically by my neighbouring traffic light car, but at least then I am mute. Ah well, I rolled up the window and kept on singing.

Winter launch @ Times Square Claremont

I attended the Times Square Winter Launch in Claremont last night. It was a rooftop catwalk event hosted to celebrate the winter collections of fashion labels including Breathless, ae'lkemi, Rapt, Bettina Liano, Leona Edmiston and Wayne Cooper. Perfect weather and a bevy of stylish guys and gals made it a lovely night indeed.

Two things were scheduled for today; rent inspection and the Times Square Winter Launch in Claremont. The result of these colliding events was a raked up pile of dried bougainvillea petals and a special vintage dress with heels. My housemate (Notion Photography) was kind enough to take some pretty snaps.

Despite it being an unruly thorny weed, I adore bougainvillea. I snip off a branch every week and put it in a bottle by my sunniest window. I take special consideration with my choice in branch, there are so many beautiful petal arrangements. One week i will have a windswept arrangement with all the colour off to one side. This week it is a sparse and low tri-bunch. It is ridiculous how happy it makes me to look on this little collection of items.

Today's movie - Paper Man - Just beautiful. Writers are a strange sort, watching the world yet struggling to be a part of it. It explores an interesting concept with gorgeous cinematic style and an appropriate amount of twee moments to tick the indie film boxes (the couch construction was a lovely touch). Do watch it, it's lovely.

I have had a few requests for more shots of my personal style. Now I am rather camera shy, but I love my bloggy blog and you gorgeous readers so I am on a mission to regularly post some style snaps that don't make me cringe too much. Luckily I have worked out how to do it.

This is my first truly personal post. I am not the kind to delve into my private life on the Internet, however, this mornings task was just so ridiculously symbolic that I really feel the need to share it. Last year me and my long term partner, who I was living with, parted ways. Thankfully neither of us betrayed each other and it looks like we will one day be good friends.
Unfortunately for me, I remained in the house that was positively littered with reminders of our relationship. Most of them I am happy to keep as reminders of what were some lovely times, but the initials scrawled in the concrete in front of my house... they had to go!

So this brings me to this morning, when I sat on the footpath and chiseled away a concrete love note with a giant hammer. Life is just too funny.

I was lucky enough to be asked to do the costumes on the video. It was rather a fun little experience. There did need to be some drastic alterations to one of the costumes on the day. Wind is not a shamans friend, and his hood and draping sashes needed to be streamlined to survive the gale, but that's the nature of the game.

Another Saturday and another market. This last market however was wildly entertaining as I was lucky enough to have a prime view of Mr Aaron Smyth's amazing balloon twisting talents. I never knew you could create such amazing designs with the humble sausage balloon. I was very quick to snap up a sky blue monkey to adorn my stall. He became my market mascot and got a fair amount of attention from the passers by. Best of all, when Mr Monkeys tail sadly popped at around 3pm, the Balloon guru himself came to the rescue and gave my monkey a fresh tail transplant. To cap the day off nicely, I was given a tini tiny turtle to take home. It was a great day!

I have popped (haha) onto Aaron's facebook page and pulled a few more examples of his creations. How cool are the super heroes?
So now I have a whole week to decide what creation to get next.

I don't post pictures of myself very often; I cant say I'm the hugest fan of eyeballing myself. However, this is a blog, and I do hope you will care about what it is I have to say, so a little pic of myself from time to time is warranted I guess. Fellow bloggers out there, what are your thoughts on personal pics. I know a majority of blogs do showcase the authors pics and I love them for it. Some of the blogs incorporate such style and flair in their portraits that you cant help but fall in love with the style queens.

I am far happier behind the camera! Posting pictures of myself just makes me feel anxious and a little bit too vulnerable. Who else feels like this? Well I hope you enjoy my blurry pics. These shots cause me no distress as I remain safely hidden behind locks of hair and muddled pixels.

A very dear and wonderful friend is moving to Melbourne on Saturday. For her farewell gathering she chose a picnic at Cottesloe beach with good friends,tasty treats, wine and a tour of Sculptures by the Sea. Gorgeous evening; fitting for such a gorgeous girl. The Zeigfeld Follies were the creation of Florenz Ziegfeld, self proclaimed 'glorifier of the American girl'. It was a theatrical extravaganza that graced the stages of Broadway, New York from 1907 to 1931, eventually succumbing to effects of the Great Depression.

It was an American spectacle to rival the Parisian Folies Bergère. Now if your anything like me you should have Dame Judy Dench's feather strewn number from 'Nine' firmly stuck in your head by the mention of Folies Bergère. I am a true movie AND musical nuttter.

The Zeigfeld girls were beautiful, scantily clad and plentiful, sometimes with up to 50 performing on stage. They defined the standards of American beauty for this era and were generally adored far and wide for their elegance and glamour. Many of the girls went on to become the Hollywood stars of the following decades.

I work from home and I find it is crucial to establish little routines to help me get started, get going and actually accomplish things through out the day. Now these routines are especially important on SCORCHING HOT days like these, in a house with no air conditioning. One of my routines is to simply get dressed and presentable so I can walk around the corner for my morning coffee (thus preventing me from sitting around the house all day in my PJ's). A post about nothing

What happened to my December and January? I can safely say I have never worked so hard in my entire life. I was fortunate enough to be asked to work on costumes for a short film shot in Fremantle earlier this month. It was a mighty project and I look forward to telling you all about it, but that will have to come much later. I will let you in on a couple of details; it is the latest production from 'This is Perth' minds Perrella & Osborn and is grandly titled George Jones and the Giant Squid.

Are you wondering the relevance of the pictures in this post? Well, as always, when my daily schedule speeds up my blog is left in the dust. My plans for today, to make up for the extended blogging break, included an iced coffee and a stroll around the city looking for some styling people to post. The sun proved too much for me in the end, and so I have instead decided to post some pretty pictures that were saved on my computer (and they are gorgeous don't you agree) and a video I made over Christmas of my wicked sticks poochie pal Indy.

This video was for my besties over seas, a hardcore animal lover and a couple of veterinarians, so seemed the most appropriate digital present I could give them. Now I understand that videos of people's pets is generally not the most interesting subject matter. That being said I am rather happy with how my little critter and all his neighbourhood friends performed for their YouTube debut.

Style Icon - Bang Bang

'The Brothers Bloom' is a favourite flick of mine for so many reasons (Adrien Brody being the main reason...whew that man is too much). Its smart, funny and wonderfully stylised. Not surprising seeing as it's writer/director Rian Johnson's next project following the incredible neo-noir detective tale 'Brick'.

However,this post isnt about the Brothers Bloom or Penelope, but their silent and enigmatic co conspirator; Bang Bang, played by the amazing Rinko Kikuchi. Her style, thanks to costume designer Beatrix Aruna Pasztor, is a liberal jumble of quirky yet sophisticated fabrics and textures, and I am loving it.

This is my friend the deckchair! I was just a teensy bit hungover at the market last Saturday and of course I forgot my chair. My neighbouring stall holder saw my world crumbling when i realised this and kindly lent me this chair, thus saving my life as I would have surely died if i had to stand a minute longer. I then dragged ole deckchair into the mulch garden in the shade and fell asleep. I'm a stallholder pro haha. Oh, and in the blue pot is my new plant - Gerry.

I love my behind the scenes shots! Take a look at the going-ons at my latest styling gig. The shoot featured the stunning Keira-Jane Ephraims of Scene models and her slippery serpent friend, Hobbes the Stimpson python. Also on the scene at Mira Studios was the very talented photographer Carlo Fernandes and hair and makeup whiz kids Julia Pitman and Lisa Mullen.

Spare time strangeness

Rather bored and restless the other night, I entertained myself by ballet dancing enthusiastically around the house while singing opera. Now, I have been taking ballet classes so I can confirm that the dance moves I was attempting were legitimate, but the same cannot be said for the opera as I know nothing about this music. Safe to assume then that I was just throwing myself down the corridor while wailing at the top of my lungs. After a short burst of this even I was weirded out so I decided to settled down and draw a picture instead. This picture illustrates that it's really hard to pirouette in a high waisted acid wash skirt.

I have been busting my buns lately updating my online store. Granted, I am happy with my progress, yet I cannot help but feel guilty as my poor poor blog suffers.
